Review of Educational Research 67 (4): 425-459. We are teaching three kinds of subject matters in elementary Schools. In this method, the teacher explains the application of the formulae to problems; he solves a number of such problems on the black-board. It’s only partly about current public policy, and mostly about our culture’s perception of teachers. It’s precisely the fact that “40 minus 22” has only one right answer that makes this approach work. “Children will eventually get to the truth if they think and debate long enough because, in [math], absolutely nothing is arbitrary,” says Kamii.[28] Even the kinds of errors that kids make on the way to understanding reflect certain predictable patterns, not unlike their early spelling mistakes. (For example, young children trying to figure out how many numbers separate 3 from 8 will often start counting at 3 instead of at 4, thereby coming up with an answer that’s off by one.) Along with the charge of relativism, constructivists are sometimes accused of believing that children will just absorb mathematics automatically without the teacher’s having to do anything.

Students who are still learning English need instruction in vocabulary to help them understand new math concepts. Sometimes students are also doing projects at this center, especially during the fraction and geometry units.
