A group led by Jacob Amman broke from the Mennonites in 1693 and became known as "Amish." Granick interviewed dozens of Amish quilters and handled hundreds of authentic Amish quilts that have been handed down over the years from generation to generation. I think it’s simplistic to assume that a mainstream Anglo reader (or reader from any other social tribe) confronts human foibles more courageously than other people. Websites of Marta Perry and Lewis include Pennsylvania Dutch recipes, Woodsmall’s website hosts a quilt auction, and Suzanne Woods Fisher has a weekly radio program, Amish Wisdom. Sermons focus on the words of the Bible, not on individual interpretations of what those words mean. Stories have been a favorite escape for centuries, and this current wave of Amish fiction doubles that: we readers (and writers!) are escaping into fictional homes and towns and families where we feel far more comfortable than we really would, were we to become Amish!

We have Amish here in southeastern Ohio, too, and though I don’t know any of them personally, I know they are still generally considered excellent craftsmen. Walking through a valley of questions, Marianna must hold on to hope as she decides where and with whom her heart truly belongs. Conservative Anabaptists enjoy a distinctly positive reputation today. Some of my closest friends around here are Amish. Having children, raising them, and socialization with neighbors and relatives are the greatest functions of the Amish family.

First, they arrive at adolescence after childhoods that are far more sheltered (and structured) than those of our own children, and, second, Amish teens begin the rumspringa journey carrying weighty baggage consisting of the moral imperatives, biblical precepts, and complex sets of rules that the sect has imparted to them in their homes, at church, and in school.
