This chapter will summarize some of the conclusions of anthropological research on human races—on their origins, on the ways in which people have been identified with different races, and on the ways in which race can affect interactions between individuals and groups. Here the body of general theory, derived largely from the parent discipline of economics, must be applied and interpreted by people trained in empirical field work as well as in the theoretical discipline of social anthropology.

Lafitau (1724) on the Huron, Garcilaso de la Vega (b.l539–d.1616) on the Inca, and James Cook (1768–1775) on the peoples of the central and western Pacific—has also contributed to the making of social anthropology. Diffusion, or the spreading of culture traits, in their view, was the prime force of human development, and all cultural development could be traced to a few inventive centres. In more modern times, their goal has become much more local, in focusing on human problems and issues within the societies they live. The same situation holds in anthropology: we can (and must) investigate the various dimensions of race, describing and critiquing the concept as we do so. Even their choice of subjects was sometimes linked to official ideology—as, for example, a program of religious anthropology aimed expressly at the “elimination of religious prejudice in the Russian population.” Elsewhere, in France, for example, a brand of neo-Marxism has influenced a new generation of cultural anthropologists to concentrate on analyses of primitive economies.
