Even when Movement supporters disagree with the original action, they rally in support if it encounters violent repression. Nobody should have a glint in their eye, a smile on their face, or feel "gratified" in a smug way when he or she speaks of bombing "the enemy". Jaeger specifically understood this humanism of the new man in National Socialism as incompatible with the humanism of the Renaissance. The Ethical Culture movement was founded in 1876. The AHA continues to try to be an umbrella organization for all types of humanists. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. If different theories and perspectives are brought into contact, in open and fair debate, differences can be clarified and theoretical questions can be resolved. But doctrinaire religions must be taken seriously, for they have a powerful influence on the lives of countless people.
