The African influence on this indigenous American style of music can be seen in the emphasis on improvisation and a combination of different but simultaneously played rhythms, which is very unusual in the Western tradition of music. These factors, along with the ability to interact with each other, became important and remains so in the Fusion music of today. Some of these creoles became professional Jazz musicians to make a living. However as an adult I have gone beyond a simplistic obsession with the collection of factual information.

The swing era finally came to an end when new taxation laws on nightclubs made dance floors unprofitable and jazz became an entertainment for listening, not dancing. Henry Cow invited four of these bands to play alongside them at the first Rock in Opposition festival on 12th March 1978, at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane in London. In the final analysis the role music managers are playing is directly dependent on the needs of the artist or band and the capabilities of the music manager and what both of them are willing to be able to bring to the relationship or table, probably the closest analogy is it’s like a good marriage! This heavy approach to the traditional blues sound gave rise to much experimentation into the limits to which an instrument could be pushed before bursting into flames.

A series of recordings with the Classic Quartet in the first half of 1965 show Coltrane's playing becoming increasingly abstract, with greater incorporation of devices like multiphonics, utilization of overtones, and playing in the altissimo register, as well as a mutated return to Coltrane's sheets of sound. According to jazz writer Stuart Nicholson, "just as free jazz appeared on the verge of creating a whole new musical language in the 1960s ... jazz-rock briefly suggested the promise of doing the same" with albums such as Williams' Emergency! (1970) and Davis' Agharta (1975), which Nicholson said "suggested the potential of evolving into something that might eventually define itself as a wholly independent genre quite apart from the sound and conventions of anything that had gone before."

Rock has been around for decades, so maybe listen to some today. Listen to the difference between swing and Latin grooves. Key figures in developing the "big" jazz band included bandleaders and arrangers Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. The early music of Santana is an excellent example of an Afro-Cuban/rock mixture. The most famous musician from the Dixieland jazz era is Louis Armstrong, also known as “Sachmo” and “Pops.” An accomplished trumpet player, Armstrong also came up with the idea that musicians should take turns playing improvised solos during a song (previously, they all improvised their music at once).

[tags: F. Following a decade of bebop and cool jazz, saxophonist Ornette Coleman led a revolt of sorts in the form of "free" or "avant-garde" jazz. The fact that you, and other members, know of Jamie (I met him in the early 60's in New Albany, Indiana) and have referenced the work of the "jazz gods" in your post tells me that pulling off jazz improvisational performances would be a "piece of cake," given the right situation and the chance to develop.
