A second theme reveals suffering caused by guilt. The fact is, people care more about singing along than hearing a shred fest. However as an adult I have gone beyond a simplistic obsession with the collection of factual information. In timbre, phrasing, form and rhythmic feel mainstream jazz still rests on a basis of bebop, which is why 'modern' jazz is considered to have started with bebop in the early 40s. It's really a thrill to know where the melody is with someone like Dexter Gordon, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins and such playing everything but the melody on any given tune.

Armstrong's solos were a significant factor in making jazz a true 20th-century language.
