Throughout most of history, standards for mathematics education were set locally, by individual schools or teachers, depending on the levels of achievement that were relevant to, realistic for, and considered socially appropriate for their pupils. Appeal to your imagination about what it looks like. [Though this part is sometimes difficult, especially at the middle-school level, eventually someone calls out something truly clever] “How about a constellation?” What are we going to call the individual dots? “Stars!” And what about the lines connecting them? “How about…connections?” Okay. I was wrong in 1998, and returned to MOP again. I had to watch it several times to understand what was being done. (See the video below.) Essentially, the method requires skip-counting up—first by ones, then by 10s, and then by ones again—from 9 to 34.

Still, I try to find ways to leave time for student questions; otherwise, how do I know whether they are absorbing the material I claim to be teaching them? Teachers tend to teach the way they were taught, and parents tend to expect that their children will be taught in the way that they were taught. The instructor may use an overhead question to pose the lead-off question. For example, tiering on all eight of Gardner’s multiple intelligences in one lesson may not be a good place to start, so choose only a few, such as logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, and linguistic intelligence.
